Getting a doctor's note in Vancouver: why BC has the longest clinic wait times in Canada
British Columbia consistently records the longest walk-in clinic wait times of any province in Canada. According to data from Medimap, which tracks real-time wait times across thousands of Canadian clinics, BC's provincial average is nearly double that of Ontario. In Vancouver specifically, average walk-in wait times sit at just under an hour during regular hours, climbing well beyond that during morning and evening peak periods. In North Vancouver, the average wait time has been recorded at 187 minutes, the highest of any city tracked across the country.
The root cause is a significant family doctor shortage across the province. Hundreds of thousands of BC residents do not have a registered family physician, and as more doctors leave walk-in clinic practice to move into dedicated family medicine, the pressure on remaining clinics has intensified. For Vancouver residents who need a sick leave note, medical certificate, or return-to-work documentation, this creates a practical problem: getting a note requires a clinic visit, and a clinic visit requires time most people simply do not have, especially when they are unwell.
Canada Medical Notes removes that barrier entirely. You submit your request online from your phone or laptop, a licensed Canadian physician reviews your case, and your documentation is delivered to your inbox within 2 to 4 hours. No waiting room, no commute across the city, no half-day lost to a clinic queue. Every note is issued on official physician letterhead with a BC-registered license number and is accepted by Vancouver employers, the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, BCIT, Langara College, Emily Carr University, and institutions and HR departments across the Lower Mainland and beyond.

Doctor's notes in Vancouver: what BC's new sick note rules mean for employees in 2026
British Columbia introduced new sick note restrictions in November 2025 under Bill 11, making it one of the most recent provinces to limit when employers can request medical documentation for short-term absences. Vancouver employees and employers alike are still adjusting to what these changes mean day to day.
Under the updated BC Employment Standards Act, employers are prohibited from requesting a medical note for the first two short-term absences of five consecutive days or fewer per year. The intent of the legislation is to reduce unnecessary pressure on BC's already strained healthcare system by stopping employers from sending employees to clinics for a piece of paper when they have a cold or a brief illness. BC joined Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Saskatchewan in implementing similar restrictions, reflecting a national shift in how provinces are approaching short-term sick leave documentation.
However, the same important distinctions apply in BC as they do elsewhere in Canada. The prohibition on requesting sick notes covers only short statutory sick leave absences within the defined threshold. It does not apply to extended absences beyond those limits, applications for short-term or long-term disability benefits, return-to-work clearance after a serious illness or injury, or documentation required under your specific employment contract or collective agreement. Vancouver's largest industries, including technology, film and television production, port and logistics operations, construction, healthcare, and retail, all have their own HR policies for extended absences that require physician-issued documentation regardless of the provincial minimum.
UBC's academic concession policy, SFU's academic integrity and deferral processes, and BCIT's attendance documentation requirements all remain unchanged by the employment standards update. Students at any Vancouver post-secondary institution who miss an exam, a graded assignment, or a clinical practicum still need physician documentation to access academic accommodation or a deferral. If you are a Vancouver student or employee who needs documentation for any situation beyond a short statutory absence, Canada Medical Notes provides same-day physician-issued notes and certificates accepted across BC. Submit your request today and have your documentation ready within hours.
