British Columbia introduced new sick note restrictions in November 2025 under Bill 11, making it one of the most recent provinces to limit when employers can request medical documentation for short-term absences. However, the same important distinctions apply in BC as they do elsewhere in Canada. The prohibition on requesting sick notes covers only short statutory sick leave absences within the defined threshold. It does not apply to extended absences beyond those limits, applications for short-term or long-term disability benefits, return-to-work clearance after a serious illness or injury, or documentation required under your specific employment contract or collective agreement.
